A high school teacher I know (female) says fights between girls are much 
harder to break up.  They tend to fight more more viciously.
Part of it, is that guys wont tend to hit a woman. So, if she gets 
between them, they'll stop.  Doesnt work with girls.  Also, they're 
protocol is that thye're supposed to try and have two teachers involved 
in breaking things up if at all possible.  Probably a combination of 
safety/liability.
